Why Thursday matters

The 2026/27 Champions League league phase draw is set for Thursday, August 27, at 5 p.m. BST, with the event taking place in Monaco. This is the moment when all 36 clubs learn the eight opponents that will define their opening stretch in Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain enter as the defending champions, so every club in the draw has one clear objective: avoid a brutal path and build momentum early.

How the format works now

The old group-stage setup is gone. UEFA now uses a league-phase model in which the 36 teams are divided into four pots of nine, based on club coefficient, with the titleholder placed in Pot 1.

Each team is drawn against two opponents from every pot, giving every club eight total fixtures. One of those meetings from each pot is at home and the other is away, which creates a balanced schedule.

A key restriction still applies: clubs from the same national association cannot be paired against each other in the league phase, and a team can face no more than two opponents from any other single association.

Clubs to watch in the seeded pots

The strongest names are spread across the first two pots, which means there are major clashes lurking in every direction.

  • Pot 1: Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid.
  • Pot 2: Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Sporting, Aston Villa, Porto, Manchester United, Club Brugge, Real Betis, and PSV Eindhoven.
  • Pot 3: Feyenoord, Lille, Bodoe/Glimt, Napoli, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray, and the winner of Fenerbahce versus Lyon.
  • Pot 4: The final section includes teams such as Slavia Prague, Stuttgart, Como, Lens, Sabah, and several playoff winners.

What the draw could mean

Because every club gets a unique fixture list, the draw can shape an entire campaign before a ball is kicked. A favorable set of opponents can open the door to a high finish, while a tougher route can quickly turn the league phase into a survival test.

That is why this draw feels bigger than the old group reveal. With eight separate matches, more travel, more style contrasts, and more chances for upsets, the league phase rewards depth as much as star power.

What fans should expect on the day

The ceremony will sort the bracket quickly, but the consequences will last for months. By Thursday evening, each club will know whether it landed a manageable path, a heavyweight collision course, or a schedule packed with danger from the start.
