New England Secures Doubs on Lucrative Deal

New England Secures Doubs on Lucrative Deal

  • By Connor MacAlistair
  • May 13, 2026

The New England Patriots have added wide receiver Romeo Doubs to their roster. After passing on other targets in early free agency, the team signed the former Green Bay Packer to a four-year pact worth $68 million base value. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the deal on March 10, 2026, with incentives pushing the maximum to $80 million.

Doubs, aged 26, stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 204 pounds. His regular-season output averaged 606 yards annually over four years. Yet he shone in playoffs, notably with 8 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in January’s wild-card defeat to Chicago.

New England values his big-moment play. The key now: can the offence built around Drake Maye unlock more such performances weekly?

Career highlights include 202 receptions for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns across 59 games. In 2025, he posted 55 catches, 724 yards, and 6 scores in 16 games. Playoff stats: 20 receptions, 371 yards, 2 touchdowns in 4 games. Sources: Pro Football Reference, NFL.com.

Contract Breakdown: Team-Friendly Structure

The agreement offers security for Doubs while protecting New England. Base value sits at $68 million over four years, with $39 million guaranteed. This includes a $15 million signing bonus and $3 million 2026 base pay.

Cap impact starts low at $8.6 million in 2026, rising to $18.6 million in 2027. Guarantees concentrate in the first two years, with just $4 million injury protection into 2028. The Patriots can part ways post-2027 sans dead cap from later years.

  • 2026: $3 million base, $8.6 million cap, up to $1.7 million roster bonus
  • 2027: $13 million base, $18.6 million cap, up to $1.7 million roster bonus
  • 2028: $14 million base (injury only), $19.9 million cap, up to $1.7 million roster bonus
  • 2029: $15 million base, $20.9 million cap, up to $1.7 million roster bonus

Incentives add up to $3 million yearly: $750,000 each for 70 catches, 80 catches, 1,000 yards, or 1,200 yards. Doubs has yet to reach these marks.

Doubs Fits Outside Role, Not Diggs’ Slot Style

Unlike released Stefon Diggs, who thrived in the slot with 85 catches, 1,013 yards, and 4 touchdowns last season, Doubs excels outside. In Green Bay, 81.9 percent of snaps came wide, 82.4 percent on the line.

As an X receiver in Matt LaFleur’s scheme, he beat single coverage. Next Gen Stats show him tying for second in isolated touchdowns (4) in 2025, ranking 19th in receiving EPA at +27.6.

Doubs brings vertical threat and sure hands. New England must adapt routes or teach slot work under Josh McDaniels.

Patriots’ View on the Signing

Executive VP Eliot Wolf noted Doubs arrived playbook-ready at Gillette Stadium. Early preparation signals commitment.

Packers’ Receiver Overhaul Prompted Exit

Green Bay drafted Matthew Golden first overall and Savion Williams third in 2025. With Jayden Reed, recovering Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks, plus tight ends Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave, space was tight.

Doubs played 78 percent of snaps in 2025, hitting career highs. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky expects a 2027 fourth-round compensatory pick for him.

Playoff Prowess Sets Doubs Apart

In four playoff starts, Doubs tallied 20 catches, 371 yards, and 2 touchdowns—92.8 yards per game. Highlights: 6 for 151 yards and a score vs. Dallas in 2024; 8 for 124 vs. Chicago in 2026.

He topped 100 yards twice in playoffs, never in regular season. Clutch play against tight defences appealed to New England.

Receiver Group Still Evolving

Mike Vrabel and Wolf added Doubs and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker recently. Needs persist. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says they’re eyeing A.J. Brown trade post-June 1.

  • Free agents after 2026: Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins
  • Locked in beyond: Doubs, Kyle Williams, Efton Chism III

OTAs will test McDaniels’ scheme. Doubs addresses urgency but signals ongoing rebuild around Maye.
